Casino Hotels — four questions

These four hotels are in Canada, and they answer the same kind of factual question as the rest of the guide: about construction, site and water. The first of them occupies pavilions built for a world's fair and kept afterwards. What happens on the gaming floor is not described here and not assessed, because this guide is about buildings and the ground they stand on.

Casinos are for adults only. In Canada the minimum age is 19 in most provinces and 18 in Québec; elsewhere it depends on where you are.

Which hotel lives inside a world's fair pavilion?

Montreal Casino & Hotel

Île Notre-Dame, Montréal, Québec, Canada

the short answer: Montreal Casino & Hotel lives inside pavilions built for Expo 67. The complex occupies the former French and Québec buildings on Île Notre-Dame, an island in the St Lawrence river, and their exhibition volumes still set its shape.

the long answer: World's fair pavilions are built to be seen from every side and then usually removed. These two stayed, and the conversion kept their stacked floors and open interiors while adding what a hotel and its restaurants need. Because the plan came from an exhibition rather than a hotel brief, the building runs vertically through several levels, and circulation between them is part of how it works.

what else is true: Île Notre-Dame is largely made ground, formed for the fair itself, and it also holds a racing circuit, a rowing basin and parkland. The island position means arriving by bridge or metro. Live programming runs in the complex through the year alongside the restaurants.

a practical footnote: the island has limited services outside the complex, so plan meals and transport before you cross.

Which hotel stands on the lip of a gorge?

Fallsview Casino Resort

Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada

the short answer: Fallsview Casino Resort stands on the lip of the Niagara gorge. It was built in the early 2000s on the high ground above the falls, so the drop and the river below begin immediately beyond its outer rooms.

the long answer: The gorge edge is a difficult site: the land falls sharply, and everything has to be founded on the rim rather than the slope. The resort answers that by putting its public floors high and turning its long face towards the water, which gives restaurants and rooms a view straight down the gorge. A theatre, spa and dining rooms sit within the same structure.

what else is true: The town around it is a dense visitor district, busy through the warm months and quieter in winter. Mist from the falls reaches the rim and changes what you can see from hour to hour. The Ontario side has a walkway that follows the rim.

a practical footnote: shoes with grip are worth having, because the rim path is often wet from spray.

Which hotel keeps its own marina?

River Rock Casino Resort

Richmond, British Columbia, Canada

the short answer: River Rock Casino Resort keeps its own marina. The resort stands on the water at Richmond, near Vancouver, and boats can tie up at its moorings, which few hotels of its size are able to offer.

the long answer: Richmond sits on the delta of the Fraser river, where the ground is flat and the channels are working waterways. A site on that edge can hold both a road approach and a berth, which is why the marina exists at all. The resort brings together a concert hall, restaurants and a spa in one structure, with the water on one side and the airport road on the other.

what else is true: The concert venue draws audiences from across the region, so the busiest evenings have little to do with the hotel itself. Aircraft use the nearby airport, and the delta is flat enough that flight paths are part of the surroundings. The city centre is a train ride away.

a practical footnote: if you arrive by boat, arrange the mooring in advance rather than on the day.

Which hotel stands on First Nation land beside a lake?

Casino Rama Resort

Rama, Ontario, Canada

the short answer: Casino Rama Resort stands on the land of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, beside Lake Couchiching in central Ontario. The resort is on reserve land, which shapes how it is governed and who it belongs to.

the long answer: The site was developed with the First Nation as the host community, and that relationship is stated openly rather than treated as background. The resort holds a concert hall that brings touring performers to a rural lakeside address, along with restaurants, a spa and a golf course. Its setting is countryside north of Toronto, not a city district, so the buildings sit in open ground.

what else is true: The lake is part of the Trent-Severn waterway, and the surrounding area is a summer district of cottages and small towns. Winter is quiet by comparison. Distances here are driving distances, and the nearest towns are some way from the resort gate.

a practical footnote: arrange the drive or a shuttle before you travel, as public transport to the site is limited.
